I like what Garage Project are doing – unlike Epic who know their bread and butter; preferring to stick to the signature American hope heavy ales. The lads from Aro Valley are branching out – making a name for themselves in the Wheat Beer arena. This drop is one of the three they have available and I was lucky enough to taste test the third whilst enjoying the first at the ever popular Ohashi’s on Taranaki St.
Yes I actually travelled to Wellington for this one, I entered the shrine and beheld the wonders of yonder (as well as fighting with the hipsters for attention from the very friendly bar staff – A++++ would shop again)
But I digress this is a sweet and smooth wheat , French for sunflower it is recommended for a summers day or ‘to bring a little sunshine where you are’ – that much I can attest to given the biting southerlies Wellington can be famous for.
Brewed with Pilsner and Rye malts and lightly spiced with white pepper, coriander and citrus.
All I can say that this is so very smooth, so very very smooth. It goes well with practically anything and I would sound like a broken record spouting out the same old white sauce pasta and seafood but so long as it isn’t heavy or red – this beer will match well with anything.
It is also by far the smoothest and easy to drink of the three wheat varieties in their wheelhouse. It’s sister ‘Orange Sun’ is slightly more hop-enthused whilst the French Farmers drop is almost as smooth but has a crisper after taste.
Some may question Garage Projects overall tactical strategy and marketing plan but I feel their stalwart stance of going against the grain is the lovable characteristic they embolden – pure defiance.
